We set off on Sunday lunchtime, and arrived in Strasbourg around 7.30pm after a longish drive. No tents to set up, as we were staying in a hotel, which was very appreciated. (Even though Bourgogne was a great weekend it DID get chilly during the nights ;) ). The hotel was a hit and the staff was very nice and helpful when we asked them where we could climb and how to get there. They recommended us a few places to check the following day for information.
On Monday morning, we went to the city centre to try and find the elusive topo for the region. It was a bit early, so we enjoyed breakfast in a cafe and a walk around the city centre. 'Au Vieux Campeur' is a shop on Rue du 22 Novembre and has everything you need for rock climbing - Topos, rock climbing shoes, ropes, harness..... :D After buying a topo (or 2) and a new harness (after mine got a bit damaged - any excuse for new gear...) we set off to rock face 30mns from Strasbourg, near Marlenheim. The carrier (Kronthal) and Kobus are looking good, but are slightly too difficult :( so we went slightly past it to find an easier rock, but with very short routes (around 8meters). Interesting but not entertaining for long.
On Tuesday morning, we packed and left the hotel to go to 'Les Roches Plates' and then onwards to Lilles for the night. 'Les Roches Plates' were very good fun. Interesting climbs on Sandstones cliff. Height was about 15meters and challenging enough. The sun was there over the whole weekend, and even the walk to the rocks was enjoyable through the forest. The area was completely deserted, but that was probably due to the fact that we were climbing on a tuesday.
All in all, I enjoyed the climbing, Strasbourg, good crepes :D and good company :)
I would definitely recommend going back to the area to explore the climbing possibilities a bit more.
