Beyond doing mountains of pull-ups (see what I did there?) what are some other ways that you train in the gym for climbing?

I read this post recently that talked about using a rope ergometer (http://www.yourworkoutbook.com/strength-training-for-rock-climbing/) and was wondering if anyone else had tried something like this?

From what I understand you take the two-ended pull-down rope and attach it to an erg machine. Only at my local gyms you can't remove the wooden handle that is on the ergs. Sounds like it might be promising though (and murderous on the forearms according to the description).
